This is a series of reports from the year 2053 onwards. The writer is Mustafa Acungil from Turkey, telling from the perspective of a character called Kamil Asma from 2053 and beyond.

Once Upon a Time, United States - 2 (22 November 2053, Kamil Asma)[]

(This is a featured part. One of the later ones. It is also published in its correct sequence.)

Many of the richest people in the US felt as if they were in a derelict galleon, on the open sea, being pounded with the ongoing waves of mortgage crash, and dollar crash. Politics was like a never-ending dark night. When they got tired of calculating their losses in mortgage market and the dollar, they took off whatever money they had left, without any more thought. That money went directly to the rising star: Oil options in the futures market. Deals were being done for the next year, the year after, even for the midst of the next decade.

Energy was not a necessity anymore; it was a price graphic. And that graphic had gone through the ceiling to the heights that had never been seen before. When it was over the historic ceiling no one could predict what the new ceiling would be. The world was on the bull’s horn again. Oil price game was a game that had no end in horizon. The losses of the past crashes were left behind under the dark clouds.

But what made oil the main energy alternative was its feasibility in the near history. New price levels made alternatives viable. Sun, wind, hydrogen and lots of other alternative energy sources got more and more attention in several countries. While United States was lost in the vertigo of the new oil prices, the relatively sensible Americans were discussing about using energy from maize and its effects on coke price.

When a pioneer firm from Turkey feasibly produced energy cells from deep hydrogen sources of Black Sea, it was a revolution. In fact, it wasn’t a revolution in itself, but it was the last drop that caused the outburst.

Lots of countries were already using more and more energy based on sun, wind, wave, and water. The oil price graph was at a height with no real matter under it. But huge capitals of huge investment firms were buried deeply in oil options. They didn’t want to believe in reality. And for a few years they could make their dream –or perhaps nightmare- of a world seem like the real thing. Several high paid managers got high-end bonuses for a few extra years. With the last drop of new and cheap energy of Turkey, oil prices plummeted to under 40 dollars from an all time high of 200+ in only 3 weeks.

Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and lots of other oil exporters have already shorted their own oil for years to come. The average price of oil option deals done were near 300 dollars. These oil exporters had gained riches beyond their dreams! The majority of the players caught in position were Americans. Since Europe was ‘greener’ in general, they have left the futures games on oil way behind while the options were selling under 200 dollars level. They had had an itch!

The speculative investment groups were six feet under before they could blink. The domino effect reached to the pillars of the American finance industry in days. Every day another huge loss was announced balancing the profits of several decades. They were more like obituaries than announcements.

The memories of 1929 were like a walk around a nice park in a spring day compared to this. Suicides and killings in frenzy were spreading like contagious disease. And California declared a freezing of all connections with Federal Government till a second evaluation which ‘was impossible to be dated in today’s conditions’.

California had been in conflict with Federal Government on subjects of energy, cultural diversity, and environmental subjects for years. It had schools with tens of languages spoken daily. It had more ‘green’ laws and principles. And –most importantly- with state jurisdiction it had made arrangements that had severely limited the deadly –as they had proved at the long last- speculations. California was not in jeopardy by itself, if and only if it could detach itself from the grand nation. And they just did that; they detached themselves.

US based conglomerates beamed their most critical managerial staff and all digital materials in no time to safer countries. With her new and abundant source of energy Turkey was in the rush and attracted much of these fleeing holdings.

New York followed California. It was not one of the least devastated states. New York was definitely the most and utterly devastated state. The city was the futures market itself. And there was no future left. Federal Government had written off the whole state. But there were still people who remembered the JP Morgan of 1907 in the city. New York declared a financial kind of martial law. Totally independent from the Federal Government... Half of all the physical dollar bills in the state holding were put into furnaces publicly. Half of all the digital dollars in the state holding also got overwritten. In the following month the State went on doing this with all the new money it got hold of with the new hard financial rulings. New York declared that she had trust in her own physical belongings. New York declared that she had trust in her own intellectual belongings. New York declared that she had trust in her ability to survive even in these conditions. And she would do this by making the so abundant dollar scarce enough again ‘at least in this independent State of ours’. They prohibited any money changing hands between the other states of the old United States and New York. They began commerce with other countries directly and based on ‘their’ currencies (mostly Euros and Canadian Dollars). They voted phoenix as the new symbol of the state. Just the sheer force of this resurrection intent cut off the spreading of madness that was the normal base all over other states in US.

There was a rather comical military coup attempt in Washington. But military was not in the position of ‘nuking’ states that have been in unity just a few months back. And there was no alternative to ‘nuking’ with all the conventional forces in disharmony. Most of the conventional forces were abroad, and their main reason to be soldier was either the promise of citizenship or the promise of college education. Both of which didn’t value a dime now. With US soldiers fighting for their dear life or just fleeing all over the world, homeland forces didn’t count to much. Most of the people didn’t even notice the coup attempt.

Before six month, it was a common secret that every state was alone in the fight to survive. Maps were to be redrawn in North America. With a pen of smoke inked with blood.

Future Post (7 November 2007, Kamil Asma)[]

Hi there. You don’t know me, because I am not yet in existence. I mean, while you are reading these words, I am not yet... I am confused myself too. I don’t happen to be much experienced in technology or such things...

But there are so few people that are still able to write. Especially the old style of writing, the style that you are accustomed to… The short messages came first, in your age... Then the communication types that used so different media in the social internet networks... Pictures, and films, and such... Most of the people forgot all about writing. The ability of reading is also getting more out of demand every day.

All the same text is still everything. Ad texts, publications, propaganda texts, program texts, audio books... All and more need text.

If my limited idea of your times is accurate, it would be very hard to be a prominent writer in your times for me. To find my place with all the competition, to afford my life style with the cheap prices of a skill supplied by abundance… It wouldn’t be easy. I am not highly skilled. I am just able to write, that is all. Maybe some storytelling, too.

This first text, as in the first word, is a ‘hi’ thing.

Someone from your world, called Mustafa Acungil, has got into contact with my agent somehow. I get that he has accomplished this while elaborating on scenarios, stories, oracle kind of issues. It is not time travel; in 2053 time travel is still science fiction!

I cannot reach to your time. It is more like, Mustafa reaching here. Only a mind connection… Maybe I will write about it someday, in our world some part of thinking is done by the writer herself, but most part is done by the agency. So Mustafa has got into contact with my agency’s frequency first, and then mine. I sometimes feel Mustafa in my mind, and if I type at those times –the old style typing with keyboard an all- he can feel what I am typing. If you are able to read these, that is how.

My kind of work is expensive in my world. A five hundred word text would be expensive for you normally. But Mustafa has solved that problem somehow with my agency. I don’t know how, but they informed me not to bother about the payment issue.

Maybe, as Mustafa perceives me, I am only a character in his mind. He had a wish to write on future for some time. When he scored on Turkiye Information (and Communication) Society’s Science Fiction Contest, he dared begin. In order to write on daily life of the future, he reached me as a character from future. Or created me in his mind…

What does he consider to give you with my help? Maybe what love is in 2053... How has computer and computing evolved… The change in the velocity of technological change… Again new anew world orders…

Kamil Asma is yet to be. He is yet to be in your world. Maybe he is there in some other times in some other worlds. But I am a ‘Kamil Asma’ from 2053.

It will be hard to tell you the story of my times. It is impossible for me to know what you will find strange or impossible or plain lie. I trust Mustafa for this. As he has been able to get into the mind of Kamil Asma, he will be able to present what he gets to you in an acceptable manner; however that will be.

I am not sure how good or sturdy a connection, even how reliable a connection he has with my time. Let’s see how the coming days will act for us!

Data Storage in 2053 (8 November 2053, Kamil Asma)[]

I am using a desk that is a present from a good friend while writing this for you. I am not writing on it, the storage for the text is the desk itself.

Data storage is one of the most critical sectors of my time which is 2053. Nowadays local storage systems that are in direct physical access of and under direct control of users are very rare. This desk is one of those rare items. (I will get into the secrecy of this desk issue later.)

Huge central data storage facilities are in use. The metrics used is called nByte. For a comparison: The whole daily digital information that is produced in a day in your world is less than 1 nByte. Metrics goes up by 1024 multiples as normal: KnByte, MnByte, GnByte and so on. The digital equipment that people use generally connects to the central storage areas over the global network. People or firms that have autonomic data storages are not a crowd.

According to the research I have made, in your days a variety of media were used to store data all over the world. Generally they had a head or an eye that actually ‘moved’ to the physical mini locations of data bits. Mechanical or optical devices… Hard disks, CDs, DVDs…

This trend was in the run for some more time. When an Egypt oriented scientist from a new African country (This is a very interesting subject, this country! Be patient for now. It would take a few separate titles to be able to tell something from or about this country.) speculated on a new data storage environment, nobody cared much. But this scientist and his team made a very spectacular invention with a study of nearly ten years: That invention changed everything about data storage.

Let’s call this man Doctor X. Name is not much important, besides it is about your future, it may be harmful even for you to know. In fact there were many researches before Doctor X. Numerous researchers and academies focused on storing data on organic structures. But they couldn’t get something working. The decomposing organic structures couldn’t hold data bits for long and in a safe manner. Doctor X had a different point of view. It is said that the Egyptian papyrus gave him this idea. He used the dead plant tissues.

The basic idea was pretty simple: Storing the digital data to a more enduring structure. Dead plant tissues were durable enough. But some form of liveliness was needed in order to write to and read from these tissues. Details are not known, even today, but Doctor X found a way to resurrect dead plant tissues as needed.

It is a long story, but in the following years profitability of the classic storage systems like mechanic or optical devices diminished very rapidly. And central storage units reigned. Maybe I will tell that in another entry. Let’s forget it for now. I will tell you about my desk instead. This is a present for my promotion texts for the new storage technology, from a close colleague of Doctor X. And it will be enough to speak about this small desk for you to understand the general principle.

My desk consists of dead plant tissues. Like paper, timber, or other things of wood… There is a black box that is used to write to and read from the desk. It has a commercial name that is related to the acronym of the name “The Black Box of Information”. You don’t need the commercial name; you won’t be able to order it from a store in your own world, will you? Even in our world, it is not a market shelf product.

The Black Box of Information has three interfaces. One interface has a thousand or more tiny spikes and each has steel exteriors and an interior that can conduct data. This interface is to be used on a smooth wooden surface. A second interface connects to a genetically developed live plant which provides for the lively part needed to write to and read from the dead tissues. The energy of the system is also provided by this plant. The last interface is a standard one that is able to enter data and provide data. Any device with the same standards can connect to this interface.

This new technology proved so efficient and made such capacities possible that, mechanic and optical systems couldn’t survive. On the other hand, the Black Box of Information is a black box indeed. It is not possible to open it. When tried, the device will destroy its interiors rapidly. It is not even possible to research it in detail. And its only producer is the country of Doctor X.

And as we said before that country is subject to separate entries.

See you…

Imaging in 2053 (10 November 2053, Kamil Asma)[]

Imaging was a slowly developing area for years. When it made the huge leap, the basis of leap was from your age.

Maybe you know of it, there had been a blind painter in Turkey in your age. He was born blind. The scientific studies about his brain have not been widely known, but people who should have noticed have noticed.

This blind painter had never been able to see, but he had developed a very peculiar -for your age- skill with his fingertips. The signals from his fingertips were forming reactions in his brain like a normal seeing human would have. He had been able ‘to see with his fingertips’ with the real meaning of these words.

This case triggered the studies on analysis of the perceived world in the human brain. In early years spinal cord was the main focus –as in the Hollywood quintet of “the Matrix”. Over 10 years of study by several separate study groups concluded with nil. Who succeeded at long last was a team which tried to reach through the fingertip nerves.

In my days, thimble-like fingertip covers are in very common use. They are used to connect to the devices that I have mentioned in a previous entry: The Black Box of Information. They can also act as thin terminals that can connect to the central data storage systems over the global wireless network system which can be used nearly all over the lands of the world without any other device help needed.

If I need to be more clear: Monitor and keyboard no more! Instead this fingertip covers can project the coming signals directly to the brain. And they can translate brain signals to the computing systems too. Text, picture, image, film are all media traditionally used since your time. But they are not the limits. This new way of imaging and input-output makes much more radical media possible. Most of which is strictly forbidden to use.

These restrictions were based on some very sad events. Maybe I will have a chance to tell about the events of this transition period later. For now let me suffice with a very interesting and understandable example for you:

In professional services one of the main problems is doing something for the first time. Imagine a pilot that will try to land a plain that has a problem with the landing gear! Or a space ship captain with a defected artificial gravity system! The people having these experiences for the first time will be under great pressure. Other people may have experienced these situations time and again. These people may know all about those cases, they may even know clearly what things should be done theoretically. All the same using the initiative in the best possible way is hard. One of the things that are legal in a restricted way to do with the fingertip covers: Creating artificial memories. This practice has caused chaos in the early uncontrolled years. Nowadays it is forbidden except specific public purposes. People in charge of critical tasks begin their job with memories of some unlucky events. Memories of people who had lived through those accidents or crisis for real and survived with the best outcomes are projected into new team members’ brains. Whenever a new unlucky event or a better result with a known unlucky event happens, its memory is taken into a memory bank. And it is projected into the brains of other public officers who would benefit from the experience. It is not them seeing, watching, and perceiving the memory. They have it etched as their own memory into their brain. I don’t think this would be possible with the help of monitor and keyboard.

I should mention one more thing… Who do you think profits most from these fingertip covers that are used to connect to the Black Boxes of Information or global wireless network?

The designers and fashion people who produce fantastical varieties. You would agree that if devices used by millions –even billions- were uniform, it would be very eye tiring. Thanks to talented designers they are not uniform at all.

It is possible to see a new design every day you walk around. Glove-like ones in thousands of different designs… Even shaped as mini-finger-whip ones! While one person could use only one fingertip cover for years to come, there are people who have covers in numbers more than there are days in a year.

Some things don’t change in millions of years; fifty years is nothing for them.

Swiss of 2053 (11 November 2053, Kamil Asma)[]

I am under spell again and again, each time I see this wonderful scenery.

It is the head-house I am in. The management facilities of this vast forest-city are located in this building. It is twice as tall as the tallest trees all around, sitting on a wide base. The black glass surface of the house is shining in a dull way.

I can see the tops of the other glass houses level with the green ceiling of the forest. Each house has a flying vehicle which is for case of emergencies parked on top. The remaining parts are covered with sun power utilities that are the basic energy source of the city.

I am in Africa. The wealthiest continent of the world! One of the sources of the riches is being the data bank of the world for this huge country which reaches from Sahara to the borders of South Africa under one management. “Every bit of data is safe with us; nobody sees any bit of others.” It is even safer than old Swiss banking.

We have decades between us. I will tell how all these happened to be. Later… Now is the time to enjoy the scenery and the beauty of the daily life.

Foreign mission members like me are hosted in the head-house of the capital, in one and only building that looks to the green horizon from above. Every guest realizes that she has survived but has begun a different life with her first time on the terrace. While the warm whistle of African wind dances on your skin you can’t believe the beauty of the mix of the soft lights of the glass houses and the green all over. You can’t know for sure whether you are in the richest capital of the world or the wildest forest of the world. While you have goose bumps with the roars of the biggest predators of the world hunting in the dark of the night you think of all the secrets of the world that have been trusted to this building and you realize with pride that you are one of so few foreigners accepted into this building.

It is told that many a foreign mission member has moonlighted all night watching this scenery in awe.

At dawn, sounds get abundant. Some flying vehicles begin floating for daily tasks. A variety of voices from a hundred kinds of birds welcomes the sun. The natural doesn’t get disturbed even under the daylight in this forest-city.

I think it is a myth but it is rumored that an envoy of a country that has been one of the prominent world powers at the beginning of the century had been unable to endure so natural a morning after a sleepless night and had tried to kill himself by toppling his body over from the terrace.

I feel that you are very curious about the new geography of the world. Lots have changed; it will be very hard to believe. But isn’t it always? Think about the times you know. If you had been told the countries and boundaries of 1950 and things that have passed in the next 50 years in the year of 1900, would you be able to believe? If you had been told the countries and boundaries of 2000 and things that have passed in the next 50 years in the year of 1950, would you be able to believe? Then why do you need it to be believable when you are told the countries and boundaries of 2053 and things that have passed in the next 46 years in the year of 2007? For now you know that one of the world powers is Africa. It is impossible to get into more detail on this yet. But don’t worry; I am more eager to tell what has happened than you are eager to learn how Africa became such a star.

If I need to give some more hints; you can say that civilization has come back to its roots. The civilization cradles of the world got alive again.

The unruly got under rule, the untidy got united. United ones are in some parts in ruins and have some bigger parts that are semi-attached. Nothing is new, united reigns. And once again Koçi Bey is right. He has written to Murad the fourth –who is known as a cruel sultan: “With blasphemy shall stay the rule, with cruelty not!”

I am very thankful that I am playing a role in the cultural relations between my country and this African power with which we don’t unite in beliefs, but unite in being just.

I know I know… you are in pain with curiosity and very uncomfortable with disorientation in so much bits of knowledge scattered… But don’t I deserve some tolerance? It isn’t possible to tell the story of half a century –and a very hot half indeed- in just one piece of writing. I will give as good a summary as possible to you in time; that is my word.

Once Upon a Time, United States – 1 (16 November 2053, Kamil Asma)[]

If I use your time perspective instead of mine, it will be easier for you.

One of the main transformations in the half century following your time began with the decline of US monetary policy. First paired with an economic management disaster of Communism, and then had a –however brief- the only world power ‘duration’; US became very ‘relaxed’ in deploying more of its painted papers all over the world. The treasury didn’t have enough gold, assets or whatsoever against more than half of this huge emission. With the Country’s credit and lots of intangible assets her economy produced, dollarization was possible for decades against the best of economic judgements.

This model worked for so long and so good that United States elected elite forgot how to behave in a real world. They had opened their eyes in this dream and judged it as the reality of contemporary world. But the rest of the world didn’t do nothing. ‘Developing Countries’ –as goes the saying- got bigger and bigger shares of the pie. China was the fiercest.

With the soaring deficit in trade, the shortsighted awarding mechanisms for very short term financial success, and the sanctification of more and more and more consumption, US dragged herself into a very deep pit indeed that she could not imagine how deep in real was it.

As a cautionary beginning of the decline a huge oil firm and a big IT firm vaporized into ether with unprecedented frauds. With them vaporized also the lifetime savings of thousands and thousands of working class people. In the following years the mortgage system which had begun issuing credits that were certain to get bad years before started to make indecent noises. The management tried not to hear them, but to no avail. The noises became roars. Houses were under mortgage but they were so overvalued and things got worse in such a short time that their selling price didn’t pay half of the remaining part of the credits. When they had any customer at that… In parallel US was invading party in Iraq and oil prices were up to 100 dollars.

The hawks were in power and they were trying desperately to remain in power by mainly not seeing the crisis. Their only success was to release some pressure in the deepening pit for some indefinite time. The pressure was there all the same. Not all the same in fact, it was building up rapidly and erupting in erratic ways. Some establishments that are pillars of the financial kingdom with decades of profits behind declared huge quarter losses. Dollar lost value and lost face every month against all the currencies -Euro at the lead. Euro zone was still getting more united in those days. But maybe half of the dollar was in the hands of foreign countries. Not only United States, much of the world was in loss from dollar decline.

Then hawks lost the elections. For a short period everything was like to be back to normal. But in Iraq it was way beyond the point for any back steps. The new politics conflicting with the hawkish ones with barely drafted plans had disastrous consequences. US weren't able to pump oil from Iraq. Oil prices rocketed again. Every week was a new peak for both oil and gold. And dollar plummeted against nearly all currencies of the world too.

The share of United States in economic growth of the world was declining sharply. Oil was “game over” in Iraq. Oil companies were surfing on rich profits but Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, even some South American countries, and some African countries were enjoying same waves more. They had new money against the old enemy now. United States weren’t popular in any of these countries. Especially Russia challenged US like in old days now and then.

United States –struggling in politics- couldn’t measure how hard the effects of the new economic balances and dollar depreciation were for some time. With the hawks back in office after some extra-ordinary renditions of some legal texts -after a coup based heavily on law I mean- all the hell got loose.

Traditionally when it came to protecting her rights and benefits United States was accustomed to suspend ‘some parts’ of democracy or ignore those parts being hurt. She was now a tigress with a wound.

The hawks, who had relaxed the boundaries of legitimate while coming back in, weren’t pleased with their position in foreign affairs. So they ignored the world and set their look on the country’s interior which carried their claw marks still. To stop the decline, unwritten and undeclared measures were set to operation.

New United States deployed her antagonistic behavior against all cultures that weren’t Christian or Jew. Islam was not alone anymore in this antagonism. It was against Japanese who were the biggest auto-makers in United States. It was against Chinese whose country was the sole carrier of the huge deficit in foreign trade of United States. It was against Hindus who were writing more than half of the lines of codes of US software industry either locally or in India. Deadly street conflicts were on the news every day.

The conglomerates of United States who had established healthy and deep international structures were very agitated. Especially the ones focused on software, IT, Internet were on the lookout for some solution. These sectors and some others like genetics have made big losses in terms of ‘brains’ because of the dollar depreciation and adversity against foreigners.

In every statistics about research and development, inventions, new entrepreneurship, United States saw the lines declining rapidly.

Gates' Africa 1 (19 November 2053, Kamil Asma)[]

I will speak more on once upon a time America. But when I tell the macro level developments in abundance, it feels like a war commandment room. While there is a bone, and flesh, and blood war going on, you can more efficiently understand what is happening by the help of moves of small figures on a big table –or dots on a screen. But you miss a lot too.

At this point in my narration I should mention some micro events that had huge effects in the long run. And the best example of this is what Bill Gates did. Bill Gates dedicated his whole time to his charity efforts after leaving all formal and hands-on titles in Microsoft. A man that has created the sector of software one-handed –if I may say-, he didn’t settle for any given in charities too. He knew about a few things that his dear fellow Warren Buffett had experienced in charity work. And he didn’t want to experience same disappointments in the face of inefficiencies.

Gates focused on one subject and one continent. That subject was malaria –which had been under total control in developed countries for years but was still being cause of big casualties in the rest of the world. And AIDS with that which wasn’t under much control even in developed countries… The continent was Africa.

Gates Foundation endeavored a lot in order to get these diseases under control. Not only Gates and Buffett but also lots of other philanthropists worked and donated for this cause. Because –with the leadership of Gates- they saw an efficient benevolence machine at work. Results were obtained. Lives were saved. There was a difference not only in words but in reality.

There was a lot of brainwork behind the things ticking in place. It was an enterprise mostly independent of the abilities of the people operating in it. It was a foundation executing like a firm in shape. Number of lives saved was being measured. The improvement in life quality was being measured. Foundation workers had huge bonuses in accordance with how huge a benefit they produced to people.

After some years Gates located himself in Africa for good. Besides the foundation work, he also began investing his personal wealth into the continent. There are lots of tales… But something is for sure: He got unbelievable results in relatively short time in a specific African country which was still under tribes’ management and suffering from unceasing conflicts over rich diamond mines. With the condition of providing standard food and sheltering and a 300 dollars payment per month for each individual in the country he got the rights for the diamond mines for a hundred years. And he was able to craft this deal in only five years. He also promised to distribute the half of the surplus money for each year –when and if there was a surplus. One more thing: –this was not a written promise but- he told his intention to get all diseases in the country under control in ten years; AIDS included.

What Gates accomplished was his big exodus from dollar right at the beginning of the big fall of the dollar. And his entrance to the precious stones and the mines that were on the beginning of a rally.

He began spending his dollars in a hysteric way. He throttled the amount of mines produced at the beginning. In a contrast to the war chiefs of the past who got rid of the stones with so little in order to get their weaponry, he followed very cautious, clever, and decisive steps. For more than five years he afforded his promises with nearly nullifying his huge dollar reserves. In this period he won the trust of all people of the country by paying every dollar he had promised in time and with a smiling face. He established diamond processing plants and developed them to excellence. There were teams of native people all around those plants. A much respected exchange of precious stones in the country was one of his best accomplishments.

He also got into a fierce battle with diseases, putting his personal sources to the help of the Foundation. He used the traditional method of quarantine with the help of modern technological devices and methods. They isolated people who were in grave danger themselves and who were a threat to the community in special spaces dedicated. These people had a service level that they wouldn’t be able to even dream before, but they were isolated in their comfort from the healthy parts of the community. In essence, they were lying down to die. This ensured a very sharp decline in first the sprawling of the diseases and in time the existence of the diseases.

There was so unexpected an upturn of a country in decline that no powers of the then current world could understand what was happening and what these developments would mean in the broad world. They didn’t have the time to respond to this country and maybe prevent her from grasping the future in her hands.

Gates’ Africa 2 (28 November 2007, Kamil Asma)[]

Within the first week of the oil crash, Microsoft carried over all its digital treasury, code libraries, projects under development, and everything to Gates’ African new land. With small jets crisscrossing the globe, select –and critical- Microsoft employees were relocated to Africa in the following week. In the third week –before United States could really anticipate what had happened with the oil crisis and the huge consequents- he was making his most famous speech declaring the new land of Windows. Microsoft products would be in service uninterrupted by the collapse in United States. But with the unexpected rolling of the events, all distributions in physical forms were cancelled till a future date not yet declared. In order to be able to operate the digital distributions smoothly a deal with Turkey had been made, and the digital infrastructure –and the astro-structure in the form of newly orbited and not yet wholly consumed satellite capacity- of the country would be used for this purpose. Turkey would benefit only with investments to her capacities and capabilities in exchange of these services. All work on new versions of the products had been cancelled. Microsoft would use its mostly diminished –but highly filtered- workforce to analyze this new world and its needs. And that work of years to come would produce the real products of the future. –So they did, so they did!

During those years of research and development all old products were supported for years to operate smoothly. The products to come were the Black Box of Information and all the other products that shaped this world of mine in unique ways.

I will speak of these products, how they work, technological improvements and such from time to time. But the most surprising of improvements were not about the technology. It was a bigger success of Gates: The new way of governing a country that hasn’t been precedented and had resulted in such an environment-friendly and rich land.

Gates established his country –which was a small one then- as a corporation. The constitution was more like a corporation policy document. The new country had no currency of hers. They used the most popular three currencies of the world at the time instead, changing the troika when need be. Budget was not a thing to be funded to be balanced: No ‘making’ money in press, no taxes to be over pressurized. It was a balance sheet which ‘had to’ balance in commercial terms.

The main purpose was: Sustainable profit. But that word was not a decoration, not a decoration indeed, it was sustainability never seen before. With the doings of the following years, it was obvious that this new country accounted not only on monetary costs: Environmental cost was included in each balance sheet: From a balance sheet of a small company to the balance sheet of this new country itself. Energy consumption was accounted for, the environmental effect was accounted for. And by the way, this new country was called: NewLand.

At the beginning NewLand was just a small country with rich diamond reserves underground, and in piece with its new settlers and old inhabitants and in between. In the following decade the new land pulled select people from all over the world with this new climate of research and development ‘all in green’. They focused on three main areas: Evolutionary information and communication products, genetics, and security. It was by no chance that this new land had been based over precious mines. They knew how to balance the real and the virtual, the tangible and the intangible.

NewLand also had a mission that had been assumed as an unavoidable task: Pruning Africa from sickness and the dark of not being in the know. They put huge efforts in the way of curing AIDS, but they just couldn’t. In time they developed a much more successful strategy: They couldn’t cure people off AIDS but they could cure the society off AIDS. They isolated the people with the disease from the people without it, but by not force, by cooperation instead. It took a decade or two, but it did it. The people who were sure to die off AIDS had their own cities and all. They were funded lavishly. What made the cooperation so hot was this: They found a way to produce clean off-springs from parents with AIDS. It was the breaking point. The parents with the disease also could live ‘virtually’ together with their children of health. And sooner than anyone could imagine other African countries with three quarters of their population damned with the disease, condemned to vanish off the face of the earth with this disease in a few years, were like flies in front of a light. They saw the distant light at the end of the dark-so-far tunnel. They had to give that chance to their DNA, it was that simple.

But it was not a medicine; it was a huge social change program to be run. The countries to be saved had to be abandoning themselves totally in the hands of this new brave neighbor of theirs. With the first few trial runs unsuccessful because of lack of total control, NewLand had to accept reign over the countries that wished to be saved. Some new ‘old border’ was being written off nearly each year at the height of the project. The first country to open borders and governance had a deadly AIDS ratio of over 90 percent of the whole population. The success relatively in short time in this country had a catalytic effect on the other countries to follow.

I won’t go into much more detail, but something should be mentioned: NewLand not only cured these societies off AIDS but also educated them so well. It was clean generations coming with fresh minds, open to new technologies. Some of the most original inventions and designs were from these saved children of the old inhabitants of the oldest continent.

With the help of products of genetics and new generation of technology, and the corporation-like management style, and being the savior of the continent, NewLand grew to the current borders: Nowadays it is NewLand all the way from the Sahara to the Republic of South Africa.
