To Do List[]
I've started coping the help pages from the Wikipedia, but all of them need to be revised for Novelas, and there's lots more that need to be ported over. MikeDockery

Well, in the English section at least, there's no one doing any writing. I posted my seed, but it's had hardly any activity, so there's no reason for me to mess with it yet. There's not much point to a Wiki with no users...and I think the easier the site is to use, the more people will stick around when they find the Wiki. The housekeeping needs to be addressed so the people interested in fiction writing itself can do what they do without stumbling around the site. MikeDockery

Translation Edit[]
I've seperated the Community Portal into English and Spanish translations. I think it's better this way, purely from an organizational standpoint, though I don't think there's any reason to do away with the "Any language is permitted" guidelines, I do think that having dedicated portals for English and Spanish communities is a good idea. Great Wiki Idea[]
I was just thinking the other day you know what would be really cool, open source stories, like a wiki of stories. I was looking up how I could make my own wiki and found this one. I've been thinking about some things to do with a wiki like this (related to structuring the wiki) but I don't know where I should post them. --Leekolas 05:23, 9 Sep 2005 (UTC)

- Well first is to note that this wiki isn't like other wikis which are more encyclopedic in nature. Because of this it won't be possible to brows this wiki like one would other wikis. At places like Wikipedia if I want to read about marshmallows all I need to do is type "marshmallow" in the search form and go right to the marshmallow page, if i want to read about other food topics then I do that after I've read the article by looking in the catagories that are listed at the bottom of the article.
- With stories this seems like a backwards way of doing things. I don't want to search for "Marshmallow Invaders from Mars" and hope someone has started that story then look for other stuff in science fiction category when I'm done. Unless, of course, I wanted to start a story called "Marshmallow Invaders from Mars" then I'd use the search. If I was just browsing or wanted to contribute to some story I'd want to look under all the Sci-Fi stories for something that looks interesting, and then go to "Marshmallow Invaders from Mars."
- Right now the list of novels is fine for browsing but as the list grows we'll need a more categorized system of browsing as well. I suggest linking to the list of more general catagories (Sci-Fi, Romance, Western, etc) the front page, and maybe a link to the list of all catagories. Basically I'm suggesting that we use the catagories like tags are used on sites like flickr or userscripts, and use them more heavily than more encyclopedic wikis do.
- On a related note, because of the range of stories possible on this site I'd like to suggest the implementation of some sort of standardised ratings system. Is a story for children, young adults, adults, erotic? Having some kind of content ratings system will be necessary if this wiki is going to have a wide age demographic.

- I agree that the Main Page is too dominated by format categories (novels, scripts, short story, fan fiction, etc). I do not think that categorization should be abandoned, but I agree that we also need to include alternative categorizations that will assist people in finding what they are interested in. Since my main interest is science fiction, I have been working on both a Science Fiction article and a Science Fiction category.
- We can make a template for a "ratings box" that can be used on the first page of each piece of fiction. I also suggest that we start a system for reviews. People can always comment on "talk" pages, but I think it would be nice to have a link on the main page to Reviews. The reviews article would contain reactions to pieces of wiki fiction from readers. --JWSchmidt 14:08, 10 Sep 2005 (UTC)

- So looks like there is a need here for some new sysops. There is a good active community here, so hopefully there will be some people willing to take on the job. You all know your wiki better than I, so any suggestions? Who has experience of admin buttons (not vital, they are pretty easy to follow), is active on this wiki, and knows the subject well enough to know what is valid and what is vandalism? - Just the usual admin jobs: deleting pages that need to go, helping with page moves that are blocked by existing pages, making changes to the system messages and site stylesheets, blocks of persistent vandals, page protections when needed (hopefully the last two would be very rare). Staff can do all these for you, but we only call here every now and then. It's better if you have people here to do the jobs. What an admin shouldn't be, is someone "in charge". The ideal admin is just someone who is trusted to have a few extra buttons and to use them for the benefit of the Novelas community -- sannse (talk) 09:02, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I'm very new to this site so aplogies if I'm posting this to the wrong area. I've got part of a short novel that I was working on that still needed a lot of extra chapters and character development adding in, but was really fun to work on as is quite light hearted. I thought I was being really clever and then descovered that the basic plot had been done before (a lot better) and lost heart in the idea. I think it would make a nice collaborative novel as I did a lot of intitial work on it, and think other people might enjoy carrying on with the idea. I personally got to a point where I couldn't see where to take the piece. Would this be the type of thing that would be suitable for this site, as there's quite a lot already written? I would be very interested to see what other people would do to change and improve the text, mainly as a learning exercise, but am very happy for people to change the story however they like. -- Karen 18 August 2006

¿Why shouldn't we use sub-pages?[]
Like on Wikibooks Naming policy. I think that is by far the best way for naming. Also this would avoid the massive use of categories (there's 1 category for each novel?). Rating System[]
I've added a line to the main page stating to leave a rating and perhaps a comment in the disscussion area of a novel you may read in novelas wikia, so hopefully this will temporarily fix the lack of rating system for a while, ;). --~Nantosh

International versions[]
The german group seems to be using his own novel list. Do you think we should keep different novel listings for different languages? What about multilingual works? --Jmoysae
- Well, the only point of using a list instead of categories is that in a list, you can add additional information for each item (summaries etc.). Since that information will very likely be language-specific, it seems reasonable to have it on separate pages. Multilingual works - do you mean works translated into multiple languages? The respective langs should be listed separately on the different lists. Or do you mean works with mixed languages? Those whould simply be listed multiple times, but I think such cases are rare.--Eloquence 19:53, 15 Feb 2005 (GMT)
- When I started this wiki I used lists instead of categories because Categories were a bit buggy. I feel that has been fixed now, so I will use categories for the multilingual works.

Tolkien Fanfiction?[]
I'm pondering to start a Tolkien fanfiction project here. But i'm uneasy about posting fanfiction under the GFDL, and especially for a fandom such as Tolkien, where the copyright holders still have vivid finacial interests in the matter and have been known to sue websites. I mean, GFDL allows comercial reprints. What do you think on this? Alternatives would be either looking for another place to publish it, or set the thing in a generic fantasy universe. But i do want this project to be interactive, so a wiki would be the way to go.Eulalia 19:26, 9 May 2005 (UTC)
- My guess is that the only way to answer such questions may be to try your project and see what happens. It is my understanding that the first step in any potential legal action against wikicities would be a request to remove material from the website. I think it would probably fall under fair use, and since it's a derivative work couldn't really be GFDL. I'd be happy to allow it here, subject to you adding disclaimers to it, and citing that original works are copyrighted to the relevant parties etc. There is the risk that we're asked to take it down, and people wanting to re-use the work commercially should be warned via the disclaimers page that the content may be under fair use, not GFDL. WikiStory[]

The Neverending Wiki[]
I Have A Vision.... A Fantasy story with no borders.... No begining.... And no ending. A story of unknowable length. A neo-mythology. A new cultural lexicon. A body of legends that will survive beyond our lifetime. An epic tale greater than any other yet conceived.
This would be no regular fan fiction this would be an entire world! The story, like the story of our own world, doesn't occur directly and singularly (like in a novel where a story has a direct beginning and end) but is actually one great tapestry or many many stories (in that I don't know you but we have our own stories that together with everyone else's make "the great story"). Each article would focus around a person, place, event, or anything. So, if it was a fantasy story, someone could make up a city with its own history. It the course of telling its history they mention some battles and some kings. The names of these kings and battles would be linked to their own pages so that they could be expanded individually. And so everything and everyone would have their own story.

I was just thinking, that square is all cool how they have like 4 things, and like a pencil, marker and then for some reason 2 pens.I was thinking perhaps one of the pens should be changed to wax crayon, so that there is like 4 different writing instruments.

In doing so, I've noticed a few - which I've placed under the heading Copyright Violations, which I think may have been already published elsewhere.
