New Main PageEdit

I've made a utilitarian New Main Page scheduled to overwrite the main page soon. If you don't like a particular part of the new main page, or if you have any concerns about something being lost in the transition, please notify me at: User talk: Yunzhong Hou. Thanks. --Yunzhong Hou 16:01, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I'll cross-most my comments here. The current front page has only been up less than a week, and in some regards the design you have proposed appears to be a step backwards. That having been said, I like some of the ideas that you have introduced and wonder if they could be incorporated into the current front page (see New Main Page B). - AmishThrasher 03:03, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay, it's up... feel free to tweak Template:Featured_Content - AmishThrasher 04:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
No, there's something really wrong about the type of template I'm using--they all come squishing together, and if you open your window really wide you can see two on each column when the thing isn't large enough. We need to find a better template, or we will have to quit the templates altogether. For ideas, you can take a look at the old method I was doing several edits back at Novelas:Sandbox. (Yeah, the ones with the Flush-Toilet.) --Yunzhong Hou 23:28, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Anyone think about getting a new image for the logo and for the picture on the front page? The former is too dark and the latter is black and white of a particular person (Victor Hugo) which isn't symbolic of anything and who isn't even explained on the front page. I should think that both have got to go.--Yunzhong Hou 18:36, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I would agree, perhaps it would be better if Victor Hugo was linked to wikipedia and yes, my photography with a camera is very amateur. I simply poposed it for the idea of having 1 of each writing tool:pen, pencil, crayon and marker instead of 2 pens...if you wish to modify it, by all means, go ahead and replace it even.

Anyone like the new logo in the top left corner? --Yunzhong Hou 22:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I like it better than the previous one, but it still does not say "wiki" and "collaboration" to me. Maybe there should be a "contest" to design a logo for this wiki. --JWSchmidt 01:19, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
I like it more then the one I made...but I like the format of the original, which I was trying to stay even truer to when I made it. This can be known by the author's comment of 4 writing utensils.Serprex 01:26, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
It's ok - maybe a bit big though. A logo contest is a good idea. Angela talk 09:00, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, please, lets change the new logo. I dont like it at all

Please sign in, and add your signature. It's rather rude to come in and post a blatant, unsupported criticism for your first edit, and to do so without logging in. The size problem is gone now, and no one else is complaining. If you have a better idea, upload your image. --YZHchat/2000+ edits 15:02, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Basilicus fiction section Edit

The Basilicus Wikicity has a section called Project 1947, which is entirely stories. I suggest it be moved here. Also, links between the wikis would help both.

Basilicus is primarily a world creation wiki. I suggest moving Forsaken Earth there or modifying Forgotten Earth to fit into Project Prime. Unfortunately, Earth references are not allowed in Project Prime. (posted by User:Brilliand)

For Forsaken Earth, speak to its only editor, User:Josaphat.

Laveaux won't be terribly interested in combining the two, I'd think. --Yunzhong Hou

Just now saw this. I'd be interested in putting Forsaken Earth on Basilicus, however it would have to be its own project - or, as Brilliand suggested it would need to be adapted to Project Prime. The "no Earth" policy is in place for Project Prime so that worldbuilders can avoid the inevitable conflicting versions of the future of mankind. --Laveaux 06:13, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

May I point out, the Forsaken Earth project is dead.

Requests for adminship Edit

Novelas is probably big enough to have some administrators. Nominations for adminship can be listed at Novelas:Requests for adminship. --JWSchmidt 01:27, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Ratings templateEdit

Well, I've finally gotten around to creating a template that allows using variables. Take a look--one is operational at Metal Gear.

TOC on the LeftEdit

Like my new finding? Use it with {{Template:TOCleft}}.--Yunzhong Hou 23:04, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Two votes in favor of replacing main page with Portals page (me and Serprex). I suggest turning the main page into an intro for newcomers, rather than strict replacement, however. Comments? Suggestions? Leave them here, at Portals, or at my user page. --Yunzhong Hou 22:09, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I have specific problems with the idea of using the Portals page as a replacement for the current main page. The Talk:Main Page should be used as a place to propose changes to the main page. A proposal means giving reasons for selecting a particular design. This is a community and the main page is a central document for the community, not something that just one person creates. --JWSchmidt 23:13, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, my new idea is to use two separate pages, and depending on your style you can use the one you like. The one at Portals is simplistic, while the one at Introduction has more extensive listings and works as an intro to the wiki. --Yunzhong Hou 02:50, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Guide to Writing proposal and SizeIssueEdit

1=Guide to Writing=Perhaps this should be 1 page, with a list of external links to wikipedia?

2=SizeIssue=This page is getting WAY to large, and I'm DSL finally.Seriously, perhaps we should flush old comments,eh?Serprex 22:20, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. --Yunzhong Hou 22:28, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I do not know what "flush old comments" means. The correct thing to do is create an archive page for old comments.
The the material for the "Guide to Writing" that is on the main page could go onto its own page. There could be a single link from the main page to that new "Guide to Writing" page. There might be someone who wants to develop it in the future. --JWSchmidt 23:02, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Fan fiction Edit

Is fanfic allowed on this site, given that the characters/setting are under copyright protection? --Yunzhong Hou 00:14, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

I think it depends on two things. First, I think all fan fiction at this website should carry a disclaimer such as the one in the first paragraph of this page. Second, it depends on the attitude of any individuals or corporations that might want to assert that they own the copyrights to characters. Most of these seem to look upon non-profit fan fiction as a form of free advertising that they benefit from. If they ever did decide that they are being financially damaged by mention of their characters, they can request that the text that mentions the characters be removed from this website. Some of these issues are discussed here. --JWSchmidt 01:23, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. --Yunzhong Hou 02:48, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Feature Article and Collaboration of the WeekEdit

It's about time that we decide on the feature article and collaboration of the week, as we have finally reached over 1000 pages. So, what do you vote? You can place your choice of page here... --Yunzhong Hou 17:23, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Featured article makes sense, as there are 1000+ articles. Collarboration doesn't, because we should look at howmany collaborations there are. Vote for article=Fortuneatly Unfortuneatly(I can't spell it right, but it needs the spot-light.)Serprex 18:10, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

That sounds like a good idea. I'll get to work on it. --Yunzhong Hou 19:14, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Having featured content for this wiki is a good idea. Maybe some day Novelas can be the featured wikia. --JWSchmidt 19:49, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

I certainly hope so too. I don't know if the locations of the featured content thing is good; you can move it around if you think that would help. --Yunzhong Hou 19:52, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

What should the second feature article be?

Since I posted first, I'll go ahead and list my tops:

  1. The Lizard - b/c it's collaborative (3 authors)
  2. The Sun of Zartha - b/c it's the longest
  3. Wiki World Wrestling - b/c AmishThrasher's put in a lot of effort on this, without much support

the story collection Edit

I find this: "Novelas, the story collection of fantasy, science fiction, fan fiction, and constructed worlds that you can edit." very distracting. After the name of the page should come the contents of the page, not some statement about the wiki. --JWSchmidt 23:17, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

It's what they do on Wikipedia. And it serves as a good reminder to newcomers of what this place is about, especially if they don't see the main page first. --YZHchat/2000+ edits 23:25, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I think the MediaWiki:Tagline should be small font size, not bold, and shorter than the current message. --JWSchmidt 03:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I think it would be best just blank...Serprex 03:07, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I can't figure out how to de-bold the tagline, nor how to shrink it. It's probably hidden in monobook.css. Whatever... --YZHchat/2000+ edits 03:15, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

It's done in MediaWiki:Monobook.css. See the #siteSub section. Angela talk 16:40, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

We ought to rate our collection. Many of the short stories don't take very long, and we can look a just samples of long novels, but it's tiresome for one person to go about rating all the works. Please help out. The link to the template is on the sitenotice, "Help Rate". --YZHchat/2000+ edits 14:58, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

An elite milestoneEdit

We have reached that elite milestone (for some of us at least), of 1337 pages! LEET! (LOL just had to find something to say.) --YZHchat/2000+ edits 23:00, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
